General Description
AMYLENUM NITROSUM
Amyl Nitrite
(AMYL NITROSUM)
On inhaling this drug, it rapidly dilates all arterioles and capillaries, producing flushings of face, heat, and throbbing in the head. Superficial arterial hyperaemia. Palpitation and climacteric flushings. Hiccough, yawning, temporary relief of epileptic convulsions and seasickness.
Head.--Anxiety, desire for fresh air. Blood surges to head and face with redness and heat. Climacteric flushing with sweat. Hyperaemic ears and throbbing.
Throat.--Constriction; collar feels too tight.
Chest.--Dyspnoea and asthma. Oppressed full chest. Suffocative cough. Precordial anxiety. Tumultuous heart action. Cardiac pain and constriction. Fluttering on excitement.
Female.--After-pains. Haemorrhage with facial flushing. Climacteric headache and heat flushes with anxiety and palpitation.
Fever.--Flushes of heat, followed by clammy skin and sweat. General throbbing. Abnormal sweating after influenza.
Extremities.--Constant stretching. Dilated hand veins. Pulsation in fingertips.
Relationship.--Compare: Glonoine; Lachesis. Antidotes: Cactus; Strychnine; Ergot.
Dose.--Third potency.
For palliation: useful where vessels are spasmodically contracted, as angina pectoris, epilepsy, megrim, asthma and chloroform asphyxia. Inhalation may give immediate relief.
